Donnie Damon Tyler

Donnie Damon Tyler, 68, passed away peacefully after his courageous battle with ALS in Knoxville, Tenn. on Dec. 26, 2022.

Donnie, also known as DT, was born July 6, 1954, in Columbia SC.
Preceded in death by parents, Pearline Tyler Wheeler and Richard Stroman.

DT attended Dreher High School in Columbia, SC where he was a multiple sport athlete, specializing in basketball as the Captain and a four-year starter. Afterward, he attended Jacksonville University on a full-ride basketball scholarship serving as a four-year starter. He earned his Master’s in Sociology at the University of Tennessee.

Because of his love and passion for “the game,” Donnie held several basketball coaching positions at the high school and collegiate levels. He coached at Eau Claire High School, Morristown College, Knoxville College, and Draughon’s Jr. College. Donnie was also an AAU coach for Tennessee Travelers.

Donnie was God-fearing and very active at church, serving as a Deacon at College Hill SDA. Donnie enjoyed teaching Sunday School to the youth. Many times, he was seen sharing the scriptures with his children. Oh, how he loved talking about Jesus. Donnie would also volunteer his time with various nursing homes, reading scriptures with the residents. Donnie also volunteered at Karns serving meals to the homeless and would distribute Thanksgiving baskets. Donnie would offer prayer to any and everyone!

Donnie was preceded in death by brothers, Ricky Stroman and Dr. Ronald Stroman. DT is survived by sisters, Augustine (Charles, Sr) Penney, Valerie Stroman, Fonda (Ronnie) Corbitt, and brother Stanley (Charlene)Tyler; left to cherish his memories are children, Tuera Jacobs, Damon (Ariel) Suber, Sekou (Kim) Tyler, Marcus (Courtney) Jeter, and Kennedi Tyler; significant other Carolyn Gamble; alongside a multitude of grandkids, nieces, nephews, cousins, and relatives.
