Obituary for Thomas Sylvester Crawford Jr.

Thomas Sylvester Crawford Jr., born January 28, 1939 in Gastonia, North Carolina to Hazel and Thomas Crawford. Thomas attended Reid High School, Virginia Union College and Veterinary School in Tuskegee, AL and graduated with a Doctorate in Veterinary practice. After graduating from Virginia Union he entered as a Captain in the US Army in Watertown, New York in Veterinarian Corps- Honorable Discharge.

Mr. Crawford was the owner of Animal Medical, Spay and Neuter clinic at 2436 Magnolia Ave, Knoxville, TN where he retired after 60 years of service. There he had internships for Tuskegee Graduates. He was the former owner and one of several area DVM to establish the “Pet Emergency Clinic”.  In the community Mr. Crawford held many titles and set on many boards. He was an active member of the Alpha Fraternity until his health failed. He was the former owner of WJBE and CEO of WBMK-1430 am Broadcast Media of Knoxville, Inc. Thomas was a retired member of the National Black owned and operated Radio Station Broadcasters in the USA. He was a former trustee of Cannan Baptist Church and he sat on the Board of Directors of Golden Age Retirement Village in its planning and establishment. Mr. Crawford worked with the Animal Welfare League with Mrs. Elizabeth Dermont where he assisted families and pet owners to get medical assistance for low-income families. Thomas was invited and attended the White House at the invitation of President Jimmy Carter for tea and lunch. Mr. Crawford was a member of Emmanuel COGIC Church in Jacksonville, FL, Pastor Gabriel Hall.

Preceded in death by parents, Thomas S. Crawford Sr. and Hazel Twitty Crawford; brother-in-law, Ernest Dunn.

Survived by wife, Bernice Goins Crawford; sons, Christian Vincent Crawford, Thomas Sylvester Crawford III, and Johnathan Rufus Crawford; grandchildren, Tamaiya Crawford, Tianna Crawford, and Tynisha Williams; sister, Patricia Crawford and host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; lifelong friends, Herman (Linda) Mattox of Gastonia, NC, the late John Steele of Charlotte, NC., the late Aaron Barco DVM, Thomas Jr. Hunley Sr of Knoxville, TN, the late James Pringle DVM, Roland Patterson of Jacksonville, FL, Richard Norris CPA, and Dr. Ellis Jones DVM of Tuskegee, AL.
